Margaret Plummer is engaged as a full-time ensemble member of the Vienna State Opera, where she performs and covers much of the lyric mezzo repertoire including the roles of Hänsel, Charlotte, Octavian and Waltraute. In the current 2018/19 season, she has already appeared in Vienna as the Third Wood Sprite in Rusalka, Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, and Meg Paige in Falstaff.
In November 2018, she also had the honor of singing in a state occasion for the centenary of the Austrian Republic, hosted by the Vienna State Opera, and in January 2018 she made her debut at the prestigious Viennese Musikverein with a song recital that was recorded by Austrian radio for later release.
Other concert and recital engagements over the last year have included the alto solo of Haydn's Theresienmesse in the composer's birthplace of Rohrau and 'Die Liebe liebt das Wandern...', an innovative staged recital of songs from Schubert to Brahms at the Vienna State Opera's studio stage.
After winning the Vienna State Opera Award from Opera Foundation Australia, the mezzo-soprano relocated to Vienna at the beginning of 2015. In a busy first year at the Vienna State Opera, she performed Waltraute in Die Walküre and Tebaldo in Don Carlo, as well as understudying many roles including Charlotte and Octavian.
In 2016/17, the Australian artist performed Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel, Giovanna in Rigoletto, the Kitchen Boy in Rusalka, Stephano in Roméo et Juliette, Anton in Pünktchen und Anton, and a Flowermaiden in Parsifal. She also toured to Oman while covering Charlotte in Werther.
In the year before moving to Europe, Margaret performed the role of Charlotte in Werther to critical acclaim with Lyric Opera of Melbourne and sang Ravel's rarely performed Chansons madécasses in the Rivendell Recital Series. In 2014, she also performed Diana and understudied Iphigénie in Pinchgut Opera's outstanding new production of Iphigénie en Tauride.
In 2013, she covered the roles of Meg Paige in Falstaff, Rosmira in Partenope and Waltraute in both Die Walküre and Götterdämmerung for Opera Australia’s Ring Cycle. She also appeared as The Witch in Hänsel und Gretel with the Sydney Symphony.
2012 saw the mezzo covering many roles with Opera Australia including the Third Lady in The Magic Flute, which she performed at short notice with great success. She also appeared as Flora in the inaugural Handa Opera On the Harbor. In December 2012, she sang the role of Phoebe in the national premiere of Rameau’s Castor et Pollux with Pinchgut Opera.
2011 saw Margaret in the roles of Annina and Flora for La traviata tour of regional centres in Queensland, The Northern Territory and Western Australia with Ozopera, the touring arm of Opera Australia.
In 2009, she made her Opera Australia debut as The Spirit in Dido and Aeneas and sang many other small roles. In 2010 she understudied Flora in La traviata, Mrs Dalton in the world premiere of Brett Bean’s Bliss, Teresa in La sonnambula and Annina in Der Rosenkavalier, all with Opera Australia while assuming full chorus duties.
Margaret Plummer graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2005. Prior to studying in Sydney, she attended The Australian National University’s School of Music, where she studied Jazz Vocal Performance from 2000. In 2005, she performed the role of Dorabella in Pacific Opera’s production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte, and in 2006 she sang Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel with Ozopera School's Company.
She has performed as a concert soloist with many choral and symphonic organisations in her native Australia, including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Institute of Orchestral Studies in Tasmania.
