Coloratura soprano Marielle Murphy, a native of Carmel, California, is making her mark on the international opera and concert stage. For the 2018/19 season, she joins the roster of Theater Münster, where she will debut the roles of Michal (Saul), Ninette (L’amour de Trois Oranges), Greta Fiorentino (Street Scene), and Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail).
The American soprano made her European debut at the 2016 Salzburg Festival, where she sang La Charmeuse in Thaïs alongside Plàcido Domingo. In 2017, she made her role debut as Zerbinetta in a new production of Ariadne auf Naxos at Theater Aachen. For the 2017/18 season, she joined the ensemble of Konzert Theater Bern. There, she appeared as Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Frasquita (Carmen), and created the roles of Pflegerin in Xavier Dayer's Alzheim and Mileva Maric in Torsten Rasch's Die Formel, both world premieres. She also performed with Oper Leipzig in the spring of 2018 as Die Fünfzehnjährige in their newly acclaimed production of Lulu.
In North America, she has appeared as Blonde (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) with St. Petersburg Opera (Florida), Susanna in Hubbard Hall Opera’s Le Nozze di Figaro, Lucia (The Rape of Lucretia) with the Green Mountain Opera Festival, and in concert with Caramoor International Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and Symphony Space in New York City.
Marielle studied at the Eastman School of Music and has received major grants and awards from the Metropolitan National Council Auditions, the George London Foundation, the Licia Albanese - Puccini Foundation, the Henry and Maria Holt Scholarship, and the Schuyler Foundation for Career Bridges. She was a semi-finalist in the Belvedere Competition (Cape Town, South Africa) as well as the Francisco Viñas Competition (Gran Teatro del Liceu, Barcelona), and a finalist in the Concorso Angelo Loforese (Milan). The New York Times described her performance in the 2016 George London Foundation Singing Competition as 'brilliant'.
Soprano Marielle Murphy makes her house and role debut as Zerbinetta in Johann Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos at the Theater Aachen from Sunday, 14th May 2017 at the Theater Aachen.
The production is conducted by Kazehm Abdullah and directed by Joan Anton Rechi.
