Lyric soprano Carina Schmieger was born in Freiburg im Breisgau (Germany) in 1995 and gained a lot of stage experience at a very young age. She completed her bachelor's degree in opera singing at the University of Music in Karlsruhe in February 2017, where she studied with Prof. Maria Venuti. Since 2010, her voice has been trained by Ks. Helene Schneiderman, Stuttgart.
Before and during her studies in Karlsruhe, she performed a number of roles at Freiburg Theatre, such as Jüngling (Kagel's Aus Deutschland, her professional debut at the age of 15), Peggy Blue (world premiere of F. Bollon's Oscar und die Dame in Rosa, 2014), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte, reduced version, 2013-2016), Cupid (Orphée et Euridice, 2015), Frasquita (Carmen, 2014-2017), Johanna Barker (Sweeney Todd, 2015-2016), The Fairy (Cendrillon, 2017) and The Angel (P. Eötvös' Angels in America, 2018) to name a few.
In 2016, the soprano was a member of the opera studio of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, where she performed Femme grecque (Iphigénie en Tauride), Apparizione (Macbeth) and Frasquita (Carmen). She returned to Karlsruhe in 2018 in the role of Oberto (Alcina) as part of the
International Händel Festival. She was also a member of the Salzburg Festival's Young Singers Project, where she sang Papagena in the reduced version of Die Zauberflöte among others.
From 2018-2022, she was engaged at the Stuttgart State Opera, initially as a member of the International Opera Studio, from 2020 as a member of the ensemble. Here, her repertoire included: Contessa di Ceprano (Rigoletto), Frau Herz (Der Schauspieldirektor), Mascha/Chloris (Pique
Dame), Princess Ninetta (The Love for Three Oranges), Antigone (world premiere of L. Dick's
Antigone-Tribunal), Femme grecque/Diane (Iphigénie en Tauride), Najade and Echo (Ariadne auf Naxos), Frasquita (Carmen), Thibault (Don Carlos), Xenia/The Fugitive in BORIS (Boris Godunov by M. Mussorgsky interwoven with Secondhand Time by S. Nevsky, world premiere) and Sorge (Szenen aus Goethes Faust).
Since 2022, Carina Schmieger is a freelance artist. In 2023, she performed Prinzessin Mi (Das Land des Lächelns) at the Immling Festival and celebrated her successful debut at the Theater an der Wien, singing the role of Sandrina/Violante (La finta giardiniera).
She has worked with numerous directors and conductors, including Lotte de Beer, Fabrice Bollon, Daniel Carter, Enrico Delamboye, Titus Engel, Clemens Flick, Thomas Guggeis, Oksana Lyniv, Cornelius Meister, Kent Nagano, Axel Ranisch, André de Ridder, Giedrė Šlekytė, Andreas Spering and Elena Tzavara to name a few.
Ms. Schmieger has won numerous prizes at competitions, including the "most promising talent" special prize at the "19th International Johannes Brahms Competition" (Pörtschach/Austria) in 2012 and two special prizes at the 10th International Hilde Zadek Singing Competition (Vienna) in 2017. In 2019, she was the finalist of the Emmerich-Smola-Förderpreis in Landau as well as the finalist of the Kaleidoscope Competition in Santa Monica - Los Angeles/USA and the Anneliese Rothenberger Competition on the island of Mainau.
She was also nominated as "Singer of the Year" and "Young Singer of the Year" in the critics' poll
of the "opernwelt" magazine in 2014, 2017 and 2018.
German soprano Carina Schmieger made her successful debut as Mi in Franz Lehár’s Land des Lächelns under the musical direction of Cornelia von Kerssenbrock. The production is staged by Urs Häberli.
